How to Remove a Trojan

There are millions of Viruses, Adware, Spyware, Keyloggers, and Malware floating around the Internet world, waiting to attack your system anytime they find it vulnerable.  A Trojan Virus is one of the worst malicious programs designed to infect computers and delete important files.  Since it appears as a legitimate file from a trusted and reliable source, a Trojan Horse easily tricks innocent computer users into believing that it is a beneficial program for Windows.

How Trojans Spread

Trojans often pretend to be screensavers, tray clocks, packages of video codecs, weather forecast software, etc.  They might spread through cracks and keygens.  Sometimes these unsolicited parasites are distributed through free antivirus programs, which are available on file sharing or peer-to-peer networks and suspicious websites.

  • Some Trojans infiltrate the system by e-mail as file attachments.
  • Many Trojans enter the computer by exploiting browser vulnerabilities or using Internet Explorer ActiveX controls. These might enter your system if you visit any malicious or insecure website, which is replete with malicious code.  Trojans might also enter through irritating pop-ups.  If you click on such pop-ups, the hidden harmful scripts immediately install the parasite without your knowledge or permission, with no setup wizards, warnings, or dialogs popping up.
  • Many Trojans are embedded into some applications, which allow the attacker to get unauthorized access to the system having remote access feature installed and thus compromise the computer.

What is the Goal of a Trojan Infection

Once a Trojan breaches the security of a system, it corrupts or deletes important Windows files and system components.  The parasite formats hard disk, removes critical files, and thus destroys the entire system.  To make matters worse, the virus is also capable of stealing credit card and bank account details, passwords and login names, sensitive personal information, thus making the computer user a victim of identity theft.  A Trojan is also capable of:

  • tracking user activity
  • logging each keystroke and taking screenshots
  • activating its components
  • allowing remote control over your computer
  • dropping dangerous parasites into the system
  • sending your system data to predefined email addresses
  • installing hidden FTP servers to promote illegal activity
  • terminating legitimate Anti-spyware, Antivirus, and security-related processes
  • blocking access to reputable sites
  • degrading Internet connection speed and system performance

How to Remove the Trojan from your Computer

Trojans can be removed with the help of reliable and legitimate Antivirus programs, including McAfee VirusScan, Symantec Norton Antivirus, AVG Antivirus, Kaspersky Antivirus, Panda Titanium Antivirus, etc.  A number of advanced Anti-spyware programs, such as Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Windows Defender, and Malwarebytes all have extensive parasite signature databases and can thus scan, detect, and remove Trojans and related malicious components.  A number of other products, including TrojanHunter, Trojan Defense Suite, are specially designed to detect and eliminate Trojans.

Turn off the Internet when you try to remove Trojan Horses, because some malicious parasites are attached to an Internet connection and are capable of spreading once again even after removal. Keep your system updated with Windows updates set to automatic.  Also, update Java because such viruses are designed to find vulnerabilities in Java and browsers to infiltrate your computer.
