Remove Data Recovery

Data Recovery is a new addition to the FakeHDD family of rogue infections.  Along with running fake scans, Data Recovery will also prevent you from running legitimate programs.  Data Recovery will focus on telling you that your registry has been corrupted.  This newer strain bundles in rootkits along with it’s other related malware infections.  Our research team has classified this infection as Rogue Anti-Spyware / Rogue Anti-Malware.

What is Data Recovery

Data Recovery will show fake scan results on your computer screen to trick you into believing your computer is infected.  Its number one goal is to trick customers into purchasing their fake software.  Do not purchase it or attempt to purchase it as it can also steal your credit card information and other personal information.  Along with all the scare tactics, Data Recovery will almost certainly slow down your computer from hogging all the system resources.  This can make it tedious to complete normal everyday computing tasks.

Data Recovery will also configure Windows to use it’s own Proxy Servers. You may find your most trusted sites marked as malicious or potentially harmful and you may see security alerts on those web pages.

Step by Step Removal Instructions for Data Recovery

  1. Start Windows in safe mode by rebooting your system.  You can do this by rebooting your system and hitting the F8 button upon the reboot.  Once the computer comes up, you will see Windows Advanced Boot Options, you will want to select Safe Mode with Networking.

  1. Start Internet Explorer and go to Menu > Tools > Internet options. Click the connections tab and select LAN settings.  In the LAN Settings, go to proxy server and uncheck “Use proxy server for your LAN”.  Now your browsing should be resumed without the interruption of Data Recovery.

  1. Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware by clicking on the following link:  Click Here to Start Removing Data Recovery

  1. Save the file to your desktop.

  1. After you see the file saved to the desktop, close all open windows and applications running on the computer.

  1. Locate the Malwarebytes file on your desktop and run it. (the file name is called mbam-setup.exe)

  1. Once the installation starts, the options Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should be left checked. (this will make sure you get the latest version of Malwarebytes upon installation)

  1. Malwarebytes will now launch.  Once you see the Malwarebytes interface, go ahead and Perform a Full Scan.

  1. After the full scan is complete, you can start the removal process of Data Recovery.

  1. Click the Remove Selected button and allow Malwarebytes to start the removal process.

  1. After the removal process is done, close the Malwarebytes interface.

  1. Reboot your computer; you have successfully removed Data Recovery from your system.
