Remove Privacy Protection

The Privacy Protection virus is a new rogue from the same class or category as Malware Protection.  The Malware Protection virus came out in late May 2011 and is now making a comeback under the Privacy Protection name.  It’s truly amazing how these rogues reclassify themselves and are released under new names and virus signatures with such ease.  We classify this infection or rogue as Rogue Anti-Spyware / Anti-Malware.

Privacy Protection will stop at nothing to fake you into purchasing their fake application.  They will show you fake scans, fake alerts, infection warnings, and false readings as you use your computer.  Please disregard all of these warnings.  As with all other rogues, we urge you not to purchase or attempt to purchase Privacy Protection.  If you were tricked into purchasing this fake infection, please contact your credit card company to cancel your card and payment.  The same groups who release these rogue infections sell credit card data they retrieve from tricked users.

What is Privacy Protection

If your computer has been infected by Privacy Protection, it’s important you take the necessary steps to get it removed as soon as possible.  Continuous use of your computer with this infection could lead to blue screening or loss of data.  We’ve put together step by step instructions on how to remove Privacy Protection.  Please take the necessary precautions to backup your data before attempting to remove this infection.  Note: There are instances when the infection cannot be removed with software.

Step by Step Removal Instructions for Privacy Protection

  1. Start Windows in safe mode by rebooting your system.  You can do this by rebooting your system and hitting the F8 button on your keyboard upon reboot.  After hitting the F8 button, you will see a screen that says, ‘Advanced Boot Options’ or ‘Windows Advanced Windows Menu’.  Arrow down to where it says ‘Safe Mode with Networking’ and hit enter.  You should now be in safe mode.

  1. Start Internet Explorer and go to Menu > Tools > Internet options. Click the connections tab and select LAN settings.  In the LAN Settings, go to proxy server and uncheck “Use Proxy Server for Your LAN”.  Now your browsing should be resumed without the interruption of Privacy Protection.

  1. Download Malwarebytes by clicking on the following link:  Click Here to Start Removing Privacy Protection

  1. Save the file to your desktop (this will make it easy to find).

  1. After you see the file saved to the desktop, close all open windows and applications running on the computer.

  1. Locate the Malwarebytes file on your desktop and run it. (the file name is called mbam-setup.exe)

  1. Once the installation starts, the options Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should be left checked. (this will make sure you get the latest version of Malwarebytes upon installation)

  1. Malwarebytes will now launch.  Once you see the Malwarebytes interface, go ahead and Perform a Full Scan.

  1. After the full scan is complete, you can start the removal process of Privacy Protection.

  1. Click the Remove Selected button and allow Malwarebytes to start the removal process.

  1. After the removal process is done, close or x-out the Malwarebytes interface.

  1. Reboot your computer; you have successfully removed Privacy Protection from your system.
